Asarum shuttleworthii

Wild Ginger

A ginger-like scent comes from these 7- to 10-inch perennials when their lush, heart-shaped leaves or spreading roots are cut or bruised. Flowers bloom in spring. Wild Ginger makes an ideal ground cover in woodland gardens in partial shade with rich, moist, cool soils. Start by seed or divide the underground roots. Protect from slugs and snails.
Asarum shuttleworthii, Wild Ginger
Good for southern gardens where summer is hotter and more humid. Similar to A. canadense but less cold-hardy and even more heat-tolerant.
