Cercocarpus montanus glaber

Hardtack, Cercocarpus betuloides, Sweet Brush

This drought-tolerant evergreen or deciduous shrub or low tree is grown in western North America and Mexico for its hard, heavy wood. In fall, its small fruits are topped by shiny feathery plumes. However, it does not offer much ornamental value in the garden, though it can have interesting branching. It has leathery oval leaves and small solitary flowers. Prefers dry soil and full sun or light shade.
