Long cultivated for their edible nuts (many European desserts and baked goods use edible hazelnuts or filberts), some of these shrubs and small trees are grown for their colorful foliage and golden-yellow flowers. Some species' foliage changes color in autumn. Drought-tolerant, they thrive in hot summers and cold winters. Plant as a shade, street or accent tree. Also good in woodsy borders. Prune out linear suckers from base of plant.

This popular ornamental shrub features contorted branches and hanging yellow catkins. It can be container-grown. Its marvelously twisted branches and twigs are best shown off against winter snow.
