Canary-bird Bush, Rattlebox
|Seldom used as an ornamental, Sunn-Hemp is cultivated for its fiber used in ropes, nets, canvas, packing material and paper. Crotalaria agatiflora, or Canary Bird Bush, bears unique yellow flowers that perch on a long flower spike. Plant in mild, dry, frost-free regions. Canary Bird Bush reaches 12 feet and will grow as wide unless pruned 2 to 3 times a year.
Flower spikes up to a foot long bear yellow to olive green blossoms as large as 1½ inches long. Blooms almost year-round in frost-free areas and recovers quickly from frost in other regions. Prune to control shape and legginess. All parts of plant are poisonous.
