Scarlet Larkspur, Red Larkspur
|Tall and stately, their flowering spikes are dramatic accents in perennial borders that make excellent cut flowers. Blooms single or double, solid or bicolor, with a contrasting white or black center often called a "bee". Tall, 4 to 6 feet, varieties include the 'Blackmore', 'Langdon' and 'Pacific' hybrid seed strains. The intermediate hybrids are 3 to 4 feet tall with multiple flower spikes. De-head to produce new flower spikes. Use lower, 2 to 4 foot varieties, such as the Connecticut Yankees, in small gardens. Plants are perennial in cool summer climates, but grown as annuals or biennials, especially where summers are hod. Plant seedlings in early spring, late summer and early fall. Summer and fall plantings flower in spring. Seedlings started in spring may not bloom until the next year. For large flower spikes, give rich, well-drained soil and regular feeding. Stake tall plants and protect from strong winds. Watch for crown rot.
