|The spiny, sometimes edible fruit of this Cactus give it its name. Round or column-shaped stems carry buds that form beneath spiny skin, then burst through to produce showy, long-lasting flowers. Plant outdoors in an airy, well-ventilated spot in warm, dry climates, elsewhere, in greenhouses or indoors. Water moderately from spring to fall and very lightly or not at all in winter.
Bright pink or magenta flower clusters contrast with the yellow spines of this succulent. Blooms are about 4 inches across.
