Hypolepis glandulifera

These lovely arching ferns spread quickly by creeping rhizomes, filling in bare patches among other woodland plants. Not hardy in the north, they need a mild, humid climate and bright dappled light -- never complete shade. More light produces smaller, brighter green fronds. Hypolepis punctata can take full sun. The stiff, prickly fronds of Hypolepis repens (Bead Fern) grow up to 6 feet long. Situate them carefully, as they do not like to be moved. Water generously, and keep well mulched with organic matter. Clumps can be divided, but fronds may drop off the new plants before they are established. Self-sows only in ideal conditions.
