|Add a note of cool serenity to a woodland garden with these lovely Asian imports. Broad, maple-like leaves on sturdy purple-red stems form a dense mass. From late summer into fall it is spangles with hanging blossoms in creamy white, yellow or apricot. The overlapping petals form an intriguing shape like a badminton shuttlecock. Give them deep, moist, humus-rich, lime-free soil and partial sun. Growing from seed is a challenge -- they take 10 months to germinate -- so it is best to buy starter plants in pots. Plants spread slowly, forming good-sized clumps that can be divided in early spring before new growth begins.
An elegant herbaceous perennial with creamy yellow flowers that resemble a badminton shuttlecock. Best in deep, rich, moist soils.
