Olneya tesota

Desert Ironwood

A single species, this handsome desert tree grows slowly to form a broad, pleasing crown of gray-green leaves. In late spring, abundant lavender sweet-pea-like blossoms attract bees. After blooming, the leaves drop, but new ones soon follow. Sun-loving, it needs no water once established. Plant away from paths and lawns where its sharp spines could create a hazard. Will drop leaves again in prolonged freezing spells.
Olneya tesota, Desert Ironwood
Native Americans once harvested the 2½-inch seedpods.
