Panicum virgatum

Switch Grass

Grown for their fine, delicate flowers and seed heads, these ornamental grasses are annuals or perennials. Use erect or creeping plants as screens, accents, or ground cover. Plant in full sun where soil is dry, though they will tolerate moist soil. Water during long, hot, dry spells. Cut to the ground in early spring. Mature clumps can be divided.

The slender summer leaves on this upright, clump-forming, perennial grass turn bright golden yellow-orange in fall. Its dark reddish purple flowers mass 12 to 16 inches above the foliage and fade to beige from mid summer into fall.
