|The most popular of Betonies is gray, fuzzy Lamb's Ears. Low-growing in clumps, it contrasts well with tall, greener plants in edging and borders. Will grow without much water, but rain and frost can damage the leaves. Lesser-known Betonies include Stachys grandiflora with heart-shaped, green leaves and white, pink or purple flowers, and Stachys coccinea with gray 1-inch-long leaves and whorls of orange flowers. Sold in containers throughout the growing season.
This selection forms mounds of large oval to heart-shaped, crinkled, hairy leaves, topped by a magnificent display of tall, upright spikes of whorled flowers. Needs partial shade in hot summer climates.
