Chaconia, Wild Poinsettia, Pride of Trinidad and Tobago
|These tropical shrubs and small trees with soft, downy foliage offer an unusual flower structure. Unlike the modest green, leaflike sepals that form the protective calyx of most flower buds, their blossoms feature 1 or 2 large, bright scarlet or yellow lobes, enclosing small orange or yellow flowers. Cultivars of Warszewiczia coccinea offer a choice of colors. Outside the tropics, grow in a warm, humid greenhouse with bright filtered light. Enrich loamy soil with peat moss or other organic material. Water plentifully in growth. Grow from seed or greenwood cuttings in spring with constant heat and humidity. Subject to mealybugs and red spider mites.
Its yellow-orange flowers have scarlet, 3-inch-long, enlarged lower lobes.
