Large clusters of white or violet flowers bloom on these evergreens, which are stemless and can reach the size of small trees. Some flowers are fragrant at night. Clusters of pointed, sword-shaped leaves can be dangerous near walks or patios unless sharp tips are clipped. Drought-tolerant and fire-retardant. Young plants can be grown indoors. Remove faded flower stalks and dead leaves.

This 2 to 3-foot-tall shrub spreads slowly, making rosettes of leaves with sharp tips and curly white fibers on the edges. Summer clusters of tulip-shaped white flowers are followed by large woody fruits.
