Acanthopanax sieboldianus variegatum
Variegated Five-leaf Aralia
|Only Acanthopanax sieboldiana, one of the 50 species of these prickly shrubs or small trees, is commonly grown. Use as a hedge in even the most difficult city conditions. It tolerates poor, dry soil, drought, smoke, dust and shade. Stems have prominent thorns, which make them effective barriers. Round clusters of small greenish-white flowers are inconspicuous above the long, shiny, green leaves. Female plants also have obtrusive fruit. Trim lightly to shape. If it becomes leggy, cut plant to the ground in early spring to promote new growth.
The attractive leaves on this variengated shrub grow in a 5-leaf fan.
